At DistancePreps.com our motto is "The Future Runs Now."  5 weeks into the season and we are just about finished with the big Invitational races and will soon head into the county, conference and state meet series of events.  This past week we saw 2 really impressive freshman have break-out performances garnering our awards for this week.

Caitlin Galloway, Timber Creek HS (19:42.52, Flrunners.com 15)

Caitlin Galloway is our Girls FROSH of the Week

A top 25 finish to go along along with a 42 second PR on a sloppy, muddy, Chain of Lakes course has continued the solid progression for Caitlin in her first year of running.  Her 19:42.52 led the Wolves as their first finisher in the Race of Champions.

Seeing Caitlin is a first year harrier, it's fitting she believes, "a great athlete isn't how fast you are, it's how hard you fight to improve each time."  Going sub 20 for the first time is a real testament to Caitlin's belief.

Caitlin is coached by David Gardner.  Coach Gardner adds, "Caitlin Galloway is a runner that I like to call the silent killer. On the exterior she is as quiet and calm as a distance runner can be, but inside she is a fierce competitor. She is currently a dual sport athlete, balancing swimming and cross country in the same season. This is quite impressive considering she is only a freshman, but she is a unique exception. Caitlin is extremely dedicated, focused, and always determined to improve every week as evidenced by her progression so far this year. She has supplied our girls squad with that needed fire power up front with Briana Burnett that has really contributed to our teams early season success. She will definitely be a major impact this year on the Florida distance running scene and will be someone to look out for in the future. She is an absolute joy to coach!

Antonio Gomez, Frostproof HS (16:47.50, Sebring Blue Streak Invitational)

Antonio Gomez is our Boys FROSH of the Week

We had the pleasure of seeing Antonio compete in person over the weekend at the Sebring Blue Streak Invitational on a course that had lots of turns and was rather slippery.  Antonio led his Bulldog team across the line racking up a 45 second PR in the process.  Antonio ran a smart race, didn't go out too hard and placed 2nd overall.

This is the second year of cross-country for Antonio.  He finished 86th in 2A State last year.

"This year my training is going very well.  I work hard at practice and Coach Wood is pushing me in the right direction.  My goal this year was to beat my PR and my Uncles time of 16:48.

I was extremely excited when I saw I ran a 16:47

My new goal is to get down into the 16:30s and qualify to the state meet as a team or individual. Both Coach Wood and Coach Nicholson are very encouraging at practice and meets and I want to leave off the season making my coaches proud! I am honored to be your freshman of the week!"

Coach Wood on Joshua. "What is great about Frostproof Middle Senior High School is that we get the luxury of building theses student athletes up during their middle school years. Once they hit high school they just bloom if they stick with it.  Antonio Gomez has done just that. As an eighth grader he was the second leading eighth grader in the state of Florida according to FLRunners. Once we got a few meets under his belt I knew he had a bright future in running.  Antonio’s goal this year was to break 17 minutes. He did just that this past weekend at the Sebring Invitational running a 16:47 5k. We at Frostproof are extremely proud of all of Antonio’s achievements.  His character and work ethic on and off the course exceed what we ask of him and is a great role model and leader for our team. We are honored to have him as your Boys Freshman of the Week!"

There are many factors that come into play when determining the "Frosh of the Week", including; time, place, rank against other freshmen, and overall impact they have on their team. We will not highlight the same Frosh more than once and the honors are purely subjective. If you wish to nominate your athlete for "Frosh of the Week" e-mail us at [email protected] with their name and why they are deserving of the honor.
